Additional fourth lane inbound on the M1
CityLink has opened a section of the additional fourth lane inbound on the M1 as part of the joint State Government /CityLink M1 upgrade project.
The section, from the end of the elevated road near Herring Island to the rail bridge over CityLink at Richmond, connects with the already opened section from to the Domain Tunnel and the Punt Rd/Batman Ave exits.
The section includes another three overhead advisory signs, providing variable speed limits and advanced warnings of traffic conditions.
While it is a relatively small section of the inbound lane overall, making it available should help improve traffic flow particularly during the morning peak by allowing customers heading to Batman Ave and Punt Rd to move into the left lanes earlier. Opening the section is further evidence of our efforts to open the additional lane as soon as possible.
The remainder of the fourth lane, from High St Glen Iris to the end of the elevated road, is due to open in September once strengthening works are completed. Average speed inbound for the evening peak has doubled, and we would expect to see the same type of improvement in the morning peak.
